Hand-held portable radiation detection and identification

Radiation detectionIn an age of uncertainty, law enforcement agents and other first responders need to be prepared for a wide range of threats and radiation hazards. To ensure the successful detection and identification of these radiation threats, the Silicon Photomultiplier technology offers a range of resolutions including reduced calibration frequency and small form factor.

20090616_handheldHomeland Security requires devices for the detection and identification of radioactive substances, that have the ability to see a variety of low energy sources and provide quantitative and qualitative results.

They are portable detection systems which are supplied to the Military, First Responders and Customs Authorities.  For example, they are used by emergency responders, border patrol agents, customs and coast guard officers and other law enforcement personnel.

The detectors can identify and determine the location of incoming radiation and will reliably discriminate between normally-occurring radioactive materials and potential threats.  This will improve the capability to detect and report unauthorized attempts to import, possess, store, develop or transport nuclear or radiological material.

SPMArray4 silicon photomultiplier array detector combined with CsI(Tl) crystalBenefits of sensL technology

Form Factor: The SPM detectors’ small size makes it ideal for space and weight constrained hand-held systems.

Calibration: The stability of the detector makes SPM detectors ideally suited for hand-held applications by reducing the need for frequent calibration.

Robustness: sensL SPM detectors are solid-state and are robust and reliable in the field.

Performance: sensL detector and electronics technology allows for detection and identification to be provided meeting current regulatory specifications.

Detection: The SPM detector when combined with scintillation crystals such as CsI(Tl) can provide a compact and low cost radiation dose measurement system.

Identification: sensL SPM technology brings identification to the handheld radiation detector market at a cost which is normally reserved for detection/protection instruments.

What are the relevant applications?

Homeland Security - sensL provides technology and expertise to rapidly deploy solid-state low light detection technology in high volume homeland security applications. These include detector systems for border patrol and first responders which utilize sensL’s proprietary detector technology. sensL provides raw packaged detectors and full systems to our OEM customers in this area.

Radiation Detection - The detectors provided by sensL can be used to provide detectors of common radiation sources. These units can be low cost and produced in high volume. sensL’s high gain solid-state low light detectors provide our customers with the technology to simplify their readout and data acquisition systems.

Isotope Identification - The sensL SPM, when combined with the appropriate scintillation crystal is a powerful tool for the identification of radiation sources. sensL seek to bring the power of identification which is typically reserved only for high end isotope identification systems to the low cost volume radiation detector market.

Environmental Monitoring - There is a growing need to provide monitoring of radiation levels in the home, office and our environment. The requirements in this area are performance, flexibility and low cost of which sensL is a leader at bringing to the market. sensL’s compact SPM technology provides an ideal platform from which to design next generation radiation detection systems for monitoring the environment around us.

Who uses the product?
