SensL Announces Intelligent Photon Counting Module “PCMPlus” Provides Integrated Sensor with Microprocessor Based Dynamic Control.

(Cork, Ireland; 14 June, 2005) – SensL a provider of innovative low light detection modules for applications ranging from health diagnostics, medical analysis, and biomedical sensing to astronomy, LIDAR, and environmental protection announced the introduction of their “PCMPlus” Intelligent Photon Counting Module – the first of its kind to incorporate a solid state photon counting sensor with microprocessor based dynamic setting and control features.

The incumbent technology in most applications today is the 1950’s vacuum multiplier tube but SensL’s solid-state solution, with its unique features, allows a new level of control, miniaturization and flexibility. This gives the photon counting community a new tool to fundamentally overhaul current applications and further enable new ones. “The PCMPlus heralds a new generation of photon counting products and capabilities from SensL” said Joseph O’Keeffe, CEO. “The built-in intelligence of the PCMPlus means that for the first time it is possible to buy a generic off the shelf photon counter and dynamically optimize its performance to suit a wide range of applications and performance conditions.”

The PCMPlus module incorporates a novel counting function (which eliminates the need for external counting electronics), has excellent timing resolution and utilizes a patented technique to achieve very high quantum efficiency. Dr Carl Jackson, CTO, commented, “The PCMPlus is the ideal solution for most photon counting applications in the visible spectrum and since our technology is solid-state CMOS compatible, we can rapidly produce custom detector shapes for new or emerging applications”.
SensL’s PCMPlus is in full production release and is available with options for both stand-alone and fiber pigtailed versions. An extended dynamic range option is also available allowing the module to detect from single photons through to normal light intensities.
